Some people, because of their inner
insecurity, express lots of complaints about the environment, about people,
about the weather. this discourages people and directs their consciousness to

A real person must never complain but instead

Vegetarians and green initiatives – Veggie Iftar Cairo

Vegetarians and green initiatives – Veggie Iftar Cairo

At the beginning of the 1979 cult classic film “The Warriors”, the gangs of New York City are brought together to consider the joint creation of a new and better future. That is sort of what it was like at VeggieIftar Cairo this weekend, where green-focused NGOs collaborated to put on a vegetarian, consciousness-raising, rooftop, potluck iftar.
If Saturday night was like the gang meeting at the beginning of ‘The Warriors’, then Mai ElZeiny is sort of like Cyrus, the prophetic figure who plans and gathers the various groups.
ElZeiny organized a similar event called Veggie Fest Cairo last January, just before the revolution. She put on Veggie Iftar Cairo this week because she wants to “promote a conscious and healthy lifestyle. We want people to question what they eat and how they live.”
The potluck was co-hosted by the Green Arm Initiative and Marshrou3 Al Mareekh.  Both of these organisations were “incubated” by Nahdet El Mahrousa, an NGO that works with youth-led social enterprises. They offer resources and guidance to get well-intentioned projects off the ground. Green Arm and Marshrou3 are two of their success stories.
Ahmed El-Dorghamy, the head of Green Arm, said that they were created to promote “greener and more socially aware lifestyles.” He said they do not limit themselves to changing only the environmental aspects of the streets. He pointed to their teaming up with HarrasMap as evidence of their broader goal of making the streets of Cairo a better place.
Marshrou3 Al Mareekh was started by Mariam El-Quessny who felt “we need a space where we can express ourselves, without needing to be funny or talented in some way.” El-Quessny hosts a unique brand of free-form open-mic nights where people can sing or dance, or simply speak their minds. “Like Facebook,” she says, “but we need a place where everyone is physically present.”
The event was held at the District in Maadi, which was one last ingredient of collaboration. The District is an innovative place that offers office space to people who want to work or meet in an environment that promises to be inspirational, productive, and dynamic. The idea is that if creative, clever people all over Cairo are working on new projects, they should probably be doing so in the same place.
The potluck was a huge success. Around 70 guests brought dish after dish, until organisers had to rearrange the tables to make room for over three dozen plates and tupperware filled exclusively with vegetarian cuisine. There was an eggplant, chickpea, and spinach subji steamed in a cream garam masala sauce. There was also vegan sushi, Indian biryani rice, and pasta with broccoli and white wine and soy sauce. Then there were Egyptian dishes like grape leaves and koshary that need no alteration to vegify.
To a meat-centric palate, the choices might have seemed more like a variation on a single taste.  But that didn’t stop me from eating my fill, and sneaking seconds of the amazing homemade carrot cake.
After the food had been lustily picked over, representatives from various green initiatives took turns addressing the crowd.
The first were members of an NGO called Nawaya. Their name can be translated as “intentions” or the plural of “seed,” a solid title for a group encouraging people to be more intentional with their seed use. The Nawaya representatives talked about their plan to bomb Cairo. (The speaker paused after delivering this line.) They are planning a campaign to bike around the city hurling specially made pods of mud with seeds inside. A video that showed how to make the pods and explaining how the bombing would lead to plants and food sprouting up throughout the concrete jungle was then screened.
Next, volunteers from Green Arm spoke. They addressed topics ranging from our global surpassing of the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide, to outreach methods aimed at promoting carpooling and bike-riding to work.
Finally, Masrou3 El Mareekh took the stage and we were treated to the open-mic project in action. Two women had the crowd laughing at their skit impersonating a food advertisement; someone else told a story about how gleeful it is to scooter across Cairo to work; a spoken-word artist humbly offered up a long-form rhyme about the benefits of solar energy.
On the roof of the District on Saturday there were boys with long hair and girls with shaved heads, paisley parachute pants, and wrap-around skirts. Lots and lots of wrap-around skirts. The crowd felt different on the roof of the District than it felt on the train ride to the District, or on the streets outside the District.
Midway through our food, an Egyptian friend I brought along leaned over to me and whispered, “These are the first Egyptian vegetarians I have ever seen.”
It is also worth noting that in that opening scene of “The Warriors”, Cyrus is shot dead, and his dream of a new and better future dies with him.
All of this is a hyperbolic way of saying that greening Cairo seems like an exceptionally steep slope to climb, especially when you are not allowed to drive a car.
But ElZeiny dismisses this cynicism with a closed-mouth smile she uses a lot, “We are not trying to change the whole population. We are trying to build a community here, one based on conscious eating. Conscious eating with respect to the environment, conscious eating with respect to health, and conscious eating with respect to spirituality.”
As Cyrus would say, “Can you dig it?”

The Purpose of Ramadan

The month of Ramadhan is not like any other month; its purpose is to rid man of those habits which he has accumulated throughout the rest of the year. It is a month that prepares man for the remaining eleven months by teaching him discipline and self control. Thus, Allah has made some acts which are beloved to man, like eating, drinking and fulfilling one’s desires, Haraam. If man can control these desires in this month, which are usually permissible for him, then he can surely control himself from other desires which are not permissible throughout the remaining months.
This blessed month has been sent by Allah to His bondsmen so that can create a connection and draw closer to Allah by reaping the many rewards that lie in this month. A person who has been given the opportunity to be present in this month can take this as a sign that Allah Ta’ala has given him another opportunity to draw closer to Him and earn His paradise through worship in this month.
In this month we will be given many opportunities, as mentioned above to reform ourselves and seek forgiveness for our bad sins. This is a month of reformation and self reflection, where a believer can ponder of over spirituality and piety and bring a change for the better. The Prophet of Allah صلي الله عليه و سلم has clearly stated:
مَنْ لَمْ يَدَعْ قَوْلَ الزُّورِ وَالْعَمَلَ بِهِ فَلَيْسَ لِلَّهِ حَاجَةٌ فِي أَنْ يَدَعَ طَعَامَهُ وَشَرَابَهُ
“Whoever does not give up lying and evil actions, then Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink” [Saheeh al-Bukhari]
It is clear from this Hadeeth which has been narrated on the authority of Hadrhat Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه that Allah is not in need of any person to leave his food or drink. Allah is far from needs and desires. However, it is the mercy of Allah that He wants each and every person to leave those things which will lead him to thehellfire and by controlling one’s desires throughout this month it is hoped that one will be able to control himself throughout the following months also.
For those who can relate, we can look at the month of Ramadhan like an MOT test. It is vital to be on form during this test. Once the test is over then we should be at a standard where we can continue through the following months. Indeed, there will be repairs and faults in between, but these will be minor and can be dealt with on the spot.
May Allah Ta’ala make us successful in this test, for the one who is unsuccessful in this test may not be given an opportunity for a re-test.
ان جبرئيل عرض لي فقال بعد من ادرك رمضان فلم يغفر له قلت آمين
“Jibreel came to me and said, ‘Whoever reaches the month of Ramadan and does not have his sins forgiven and so enters the Fire, then may Allah distance him, say ameen.” So I said “Ameen” [Mustadrak al-Haakim]
In summary, the month of Ramadhan has been made so that mankind can take benefit of the merits and blessings contained within to change themselves for the better and by doing so create a bond with Allah that will continue throughout the eleven remaining months.
It is a month within which Allah has instructed us to place more emphasis on actions regarding our Deen (religion) as opposed to our daily routine and emphasis on worldly matters.
I pray that this information comes in use and aids the readers in preparing for the month of Ramadhan.
As a reminder, please commit the following Du’a to memory and make a habit of reciting it daily until the day of Ramdhan.
اللهم بارك لنا في رجب وشعبان وبلغنا رمضان
“O Allah, make the months of Rajab and Sha’ban blessed for us, and let us reach the month of Ramadhan.” [Musnad-e-Ahmed]

In this week's Spot, Sadhguru writes about the memory of the body, which far outweighs that of the mind: "Whatever kind of memory the mind carries, I see a lot of people in the world are pretty low GB in their mind, but their bodies are phenomenal GB. Your body still remembers just about anything."

Shirdi Sai Baba - Blissful joy that subdues our sufferings

Shirdi Sai Baba - Blissful joy that subdues our sufferings:
Om Shri SaiNathaya Namaha,

Last post was about Sai Baba taking the sufferings upon Himself. In layman terms this becomes little difficult to understand. Although numerous incidents happened, people actually experienced that their suffering ended and there were many witness to those incidents. If we read the leelas of Shirdi Sai Baba, these sort of incident happened almost daily. They have not stopped after the Compassionate One left His physical body, which is called MahaSamadhi.

Blissful Joy is my Nature

In the Sacred text Shri Sai SatCharitra chapter number 19. Sai Baba have explained "Know that which is knowledge incarnate, or Supreme pure Consciousness or Blissful joy -- that is my true nature. So meditate on it regularly."

Those chapters (18 and 19) of Shri Sai SatCharitra has excellent guidance for meditation from Master Guide Baba himself.  But here the topic we are about to see is different and the above quote is relevant with it.

Since Sai Baba is one with the almighty, He is also the ocean of bliss. The topic of this particular was knocking on the door of mind and i stumbled upon an article signs of spiritual perfection by Meher Baba as a help to this post. I consider it a little miracle :). The quote below fits perfectly well.

The second sign is the atmosphere of bliss that Perfection radiates in its immediate vicinity, an atmosphere that a stranger in search of it cannot help feeling. A Perfect Master not only enjoys infinite bliss but also experiences universal suffering. The acuteness of suffering however is nullified or subdued by the overwhelming feeling of bliss. Hence Perfection can outwardly appear blissfully calm in the face of every kind of suffering and persecution.

The acuteness of sufferings subdues

Now what was going on in my mind to understand this in layman's term. Lets suppose we individuals are glass of water holding some amount of that spiritual infinite bliss. More an individual is spiritual more bliss he or she experiences and also radiates the same.

Nobody is free from suffering. It's a fact that sufferings visits each and everyone.  Lets imagine suffering as ink. Now suppose a drop of ink is dropped in a small glass of water. The color of water (consciousness or chitta) will change. It will all be the color of ink (suffering). So individual with very less spiritual advancement will experience that more intensely. If the same drop of ink is dropped in a lake or river (more spiritually advanced beings), the same drop of ink will have negligible effect for a short time.

While Sadguru's are infinite oceans of bliss. They can consume rivers of inks with and diffuse it's effects. This explains that when Sai Baba took upon the pain and sufferings of devotees, not a trace of pain was seen on his glowing benign face. Not only this the Sadgurus or spiritual Gurus are the ones capable of awakening the source of infinite bliss in each one of us.

What should we learn from this?

We can also understand from this that more the person gets spiritually advanced, he or she experiences more and more bliss. The smile and experience of bliss and happiness is not easily disturbed with challenges and trials of life. Happiness and bliss becomes a the nature of those people. They carry it with them along with the other good qualities like compassion. As Sai Baba has taught us to seek His blissful nature, we should seek His blissful nature and love and grace. Then there would be no need to ask for mundane things which our mind feels would bring happiness and harmony.
