What are statins, and how do they work?

"Statins" are a class of drugs that lower the level of cholesterol in the blood by reducing the production of cholesterol by the liver. Statins block the enzyme in the liver that is responsible for making cholesterol. This enzyme is called hydroxy-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductase). Scientifically, statins are referred to as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors.

Cholesterol is critical to the normal function of every cell in the body. However, it also contributes to the development of atherosclerosis, a condition in which cholesterol-containing plaques form within arteries. These plaques block the arteries and reduce the flow of blood to the tissues that arteries supply. When plaques rupture, a blood clot forms on the plaque, thereby further blocking the artery and reducing the flow of blood. When blood flow is reduced sufficiently in the arteries that supply blood to the heart, the result is angina (chest pain) or a heart attack. If the clot occurs on plaques in the brain, the result is a stroke. If the clots occur on plaques in the leg, they cause intermittent claudication (pain in the legs while walking). By reducing the production of cholesterol, statins are able to slow the formation of new plaques and occasionally can reduce the size of plaques that already exist. In addition, through mechanisms that are not well understood, statins may also stabilize plaques and make them less prone to rupturing and promoting the development of clots.
The important role of cholesterol in atherosclerosis is widely accepted by scientists. Research from the last few years shows that aggressive cholesterol reduction is more beneficial than modest reductions.
Atherosclerosis is a complex process that involves more than just cholesterol. For example, scientists have discovered that inflammation in the walls of the arteries may be an important factor in atherosclerosis. In addition to lowering cholesterol levels, statins also reduce inflammation, which could be another mechanism by which statins beneficially affect atherosclerosis. This reduction of inflammation does not depend on statins' ability to reduce cholesterol. Furthermore, these anti-inflammatory effects can be seen as early as two weeks after starting statins.

For what conditions are statins used?

Statins are used for preventing and treating atherosclerosis that causes chest pain, heart attacks, strokes, and intermittent claudication in individuals who have or are at risk for atherosclerosis.
Risk factors for atherosclerosis include:
  • abnormally elevated cholesterol levels,
  • a family history of heart attacks (particularly at a young age),
  • increasing age, and
  • diabetes.
Most individuals are placed on statins because of high levels of cholesterol. Though reduction of cholesterol is important, heart disease is complex and, as discussed previously, other factors such as inflammation may play a role. Thirty-five percent of individuals who develop heart attacks do not have high blood cholesterol levels, yet most of them have atherosclerosis. This means that high levels of cholesterol are not always necessary for atherosclerotic plaques to form.

10 Big Companies That Promote Employee Meditation

Work can be a stressful place, and with companies trying to keep an eye on the bottom line while simultaneously improving productivity, many workers may find themselves with more responsibilities than ever before. While there is no way to totally eliminate stress from the workplace, some companies are doing what they can to help employees relax, and many, like those that we feature here, are doing that through on-site meditation.
Meditation has been shown to produce a wide range of mental benefits when practiced on a daily basis. Studies have shown that it can actually change how the brain processes information and manages the effects of stress, depression, and anxiety. Those who practice meditation, research has demonstrated, are happier and calmer than their counterparts who don’t, so it’s no surprise that many high-stress businesses are catching on and making meditation a part of their corporate mission. Read on to learn about some of the companies that are leading the way in promoting on-the-job meditation.
  1. Apple

It should come as no surprise to those who know a bit about the life of Steve Jobs that meditation has long been promoted at Apple. Jobs often took part in meditation retreats, was married in a Zen ceremony, and maintained lifelong friendships with many monks. Some speculate that the mental control he gained from meditation was what helped him become so successful in creating new, innovative products for Apple. Whatever it was, Jobs wanted to pass on his love of meditation to others in the workplace, allowing employees of the tech giant to take 30 minutes each day to meditate at work, providing classes on meditation and yoga on-site, and offering the use of a meditation room.
  2. Prentice Hall Publishing

The publishing world can be a tough place to make a living, but this publishing company is trying to give workers a chance to shake off their stress and refocus while at work through meditation. Prentice Hall has created a meditation space in their corporate headquarters, which they call the “Quiet Room.” Employees can take a break and slip into the space for meditation, prayer, or just a moment of quiet reflection when they’re feeling particularly stressed out.
  3. Google

Even when you’re working at a company that offers unbelievable benefits like Google, things can get a bit stressful on the job. One of Google’s original software engineers and now head of personal growth (how cool is that job?), Chade-Meng Tan, has been working hard to bring meditation into the workplace. Tan spearheaded a program at Google in 2007 called “Search Inside Yourself” which helped more than 500 employees learn how to breathe mindfully, listen to their coworkers, and even improve their emotional intelligence. On a regular basis, the company also offers meditation space and meditation courses, believing that meditation can help improve not only employee mental health and well-being but the company’s bottom line as well.
  4. Nike

Nike’s motto “just do it” applies to meditation as well, it seems. The company is one of many big businesses incorporating meditation practice into their workplace. Employees of the athletic apparel giant have access to relaxation rooms, which they can use to take a nap, pray, or of course meditate. In addition to these quiet rooms, employees can also take part in meditation and yoga classes without ever having to leave the office.
  5. AOL Time Warner

In 2000, AOL Time Warner reduced its sales and marketing staff from 850 to just 500 people, leaving employees to shoulder a lot more work with a lot less help. In order to help employees deal with the stress of their new longer and busier days, the corporation added meditation classes into the work day. Workers could slip away from what, at the time, were 12 hour days into a class or a quiet room to help refocus, relax, and refresh themselves before getting back to their long days.
  1. McKinsey & Co.

Management and consulting firm McKinsey & Co. might be a strange place to find meditation happening, but the company is embracing meditation as part of a new HR strategy aimed at keeping employees happy and healthy. McKinsey partner and meditation aficionado Michael Rennie says, “What’s good for the spirit is good for the bottom line,” and the company is taking that to heart, developing meditation and self-analysis programs not only for their own employees but for other multi-million dollar corporations as well. In one case, a meditation program developed by McKinsey for an Australian client saved the business more than $20 million.
  2. Yahoo!

Yahoo! is another tech company that is doing what it can to reduce employee stress while at work. Employees of Yahoo! can take advantage of meditation rooms or engage with others who share their interests in a more mindful work day by taking free classes offered on-site.
  3. Deutsche Bank

A global banking and financial services company, Deutsche Bank has undoubtedly had a few rough years due to the global economic crisis, but employees may be getting a bit of stress relief just by walking through the doors of their workplace. Deutsche Bank is yet another multinational business getting behind the meditation-in-the-workplace trend. Despite the fact that the company may seem too traditional to embrace such a progressive policy, they’ve been offering meditation classes and quiet spaces on site for several years, hoping that it will help to reduce worker stress and lead to more level-headed thinking.
  4. Procter & Gamble

P&G’s CEO A.G. Lafley is dedicated to his own meditation practice and thinks it has a lot to offer employees as well. He has said, “You can not out-work a problem, you have to out-meditation it.” The company offers a wealth of health and fitness programs that include meditation classes and spaces in their major corporate buildings.
  5. HBO

While the programs HBO produces might turn viewers into couch potatoes, it doesn’t promote the same attitude in its employees. Instead, it offers a wealth of resources to help them stay healthy both mentally and physically, with gyms, free yoga classes, and meditation classes offered in the workplace. Perhaps the promotion of forms of mindful exercise and meditation helped inspire their new hit show Enlightened.

How to do Meditation?

ANAPANASATI MEDITATION

Close your eyes

Take all the time you need to get comfortable shift muscles stretch and relax spine and neck are relaxed...not held stiffly!

There is no stiffness here just comfort. The beginning of calm… There is no hurry now
there is nothing else to do ... or think about ... just pure relaxation!

Be the Breath

INHALE softly, easily...

EXHALE softly, easily

Let your breath be a rhythm of calm
Your breath is rhythms of calm follow your breath

Be Calm

Use your mind to follow your breath in ... out ... in ... out

That is all

Be Still

BE WITH YOUR BREATH

Be with your breath-energy

Anapanasati Meditation is so simple...so very easy... not at all difficult

Meditation can be done by any one at any age at any time at any place…

Meditation should be done regularly ... every day meditation should be done... as per one's age in terms of so many minutes...

Example: Twenty minutes... if your age is twenty years... forty minutes... if your age is forty years and so on and so forty

Spiritual health is root and Physical Health is the fruit.

Anapanasati Meditation alone gives Spiritual Health to a person…

Meditation is the greatest gift to be given to our lives by our own efforts.

The physical body has its own natural and easy rhythm of the breath. In meditation, the mind has to become totally attuned to the normal rhythmic nature of the breath of the physical body.

Meditation Has Manifold Benefits

  • Healing of all diseases is immediate!
  • Memory power becomes increased!
  • Wasteful habits die a natural death!
  • Mind always stays in a peaceful and Joyful state!
  • All work gets done with greater efficiency!
  • Sleep-time requirements get reduced!
  • Relationships become more qualitative and fulfilling!
  • Thought power is tremendously increased!
  • Ability to discern rights and wrongs is sharpened!
  • Purpose of life is better understood!

HEALING

All physical afflictions are because of mental worries. All mental worries are because of  intellectual immaturity. Intellectual immaturity is because of lack of spiritual energy and lack of spiritual wisdom.

Through meditation, when we get abundant spiritual wisdom, the intellect becomes mature. By and by, all mental worries cease. Consequently, all physical afflictions disappear.

Meditation is the only way to heal all diseases. Diseases are primarily because of previous negative karma. Until and unless the negative karma is neutralized, the disease will not vanish; no medicine will be of any help to clear the negative karma.

MEMORY POWER

The abundant spiritual energy gained in meditation helps the brain to work more efficiently and to its maximum capacity. Meditation enhances memory power tremendously.

Therefore, meditation is absolutely compulsory for all students… both at the school level and at the university level.

WASTEFUL HABITS

There are several wasteful habits like over-eating, over-sleeping, over-talking, over-thinking, over-drinking etc., etc.

With the abundant spiritual wisdom and spiritual energy obtained from meditation, all the wasteful habits die naturally.

PEACEFUL AND JOYFUL MIND

Life is so full of defeats, insults and pains… for any person. However, for a person with spiritual knowledge and spiritual energy, life is always peaceful and joyful… inspire of all the defeats, insults and pains.

WORK EFFICIENCY

In the presence of abundant spiritual energy and spiritual wisdom, all work, be it physical or mental, gets done with greater efficiency.
In less time, more work is achieved. With least resources, commendable work gets done.

SLEEP TIME

Abundant spiritual energy is obtained in meditation. Only a fraction of that energy is obtained during sleep.

Half-an-hour of deep meditation is equivalent to six hours of deep sleep… in terms of rest for the body and energy for the mind.

RELATIONSHIPS

Lack of spiritual wisdom is the only reason why inter-personal relationships are so very un-qualitative and unfulfilling. In the presence of spiritual wisdom all inter-personal relationships become highly qualitative and totally fulfilling.

POWER OF THOUGHT

Thoughts need power to reach their targets. In a restless state of mind, thoughts are produced with least power. Therefore, they don’t reach their respective targets.

However, in the presence of a restful state of mind, thoughts acquire great power and all intents get dramatically actualized.

RIGHT AND WRONG

“What to do?”, “What not to do?”
These are always million dollar questions!
“What is right?”, “What is wrong?”
We are in a perpetual dilemma!
However, such dilemmas are only for the spiritually ignorant persons. For a spiritually wise person there are no million dollar questions whatsoever! For a spiritually wise person there are no dilemmas!

PURPOSE OF LIFE

We are all born with a purpose, with a mission, with a design, with a plan. Only the spiritually wise can understand and be aware of their particular purpose., mission, design and plan in their lives.
